I want a rug with the Mandelbrot Set on it. Any idea where I could get one from? Google tells me nothing.

ok, having read a bit i'm not sure i understand what you are suggesting. i just want a regular woven patterned rug, that is suitable for walking on and hiding cables under. could probably manage with half a dozen colours.

i was thinking that there should be something like cafepress.com but for rugs, where you give them a PNG with the pattern and they send you a rug. technology should certainly be there.

I know something similar exists, but it's a lot more expensive, because rugs, even cheaply made ones, are done on a loom. A design needs to be made, and then plotted, and then either fed into a program the machine that does the looming can read, or into a pattern the (human)weaver can read. From the decorating shows I watch, this seems to strike me as something which costs in the £1,000 to several £1,000 range.

You could, perhaps, get a small-weave sisal rug, a projector, and some paint, in order to make a painted rather than weaved one yourself.

Hmm. Eek! This sounds like something that ought to be possible to be cheaper if done in sufficient volume. I guess however manufacturers of bespoke rugs have no real interest in pushing down to sub-£1,000 prices.

So either I can set up a cheap bespoke rug manufacturing business, and do it myself, or try to find a boring production-line one, or just give up.

The only thing I could think of which seems plausible would be to approach a rug business and impress upon them the saleability of a mandlebrot design so much that they put one into regular production. The only company that comes to mind for me would be Trans-Ocean, but I can't find any contact info with a very cursory search. My google-fu sucks this morning.

You might do a search for them through - perhaps you'll actually find a rug which already exists that you'll like, they make quite nice stuff which wears nicely. I've no idea how availability in the UK is, however.
