In reverse order:

Inspection of flat went OK. He only briefly poked his nose in, just long enough to check that I hadn't knocked any walls through really. Which I haven't, so that's alright then.

Went to the Criterion's pub quiz, with [livejournal.com profile] vjbseven, [livejournal.com profile] qfyd and [livejournal.com profile] bx_83. This was not really what we were looking for, alas. Questions were good but were handed out on a piece of paper, and there the answer bit lacked oomph. Also we came last but one (we ere team Noobs). So not sure we'd do the quiz there again. However, they have a fine beer menu.

Recovered from being ill. After I got back home Monday, I spent a while being active and then spent most of the day in bed. Think I made it much worse for myself by trying to go to work. Oh well.

Stamfordshire continues apace. Apart from being punchier and having more gags, it has acquired sections on politics and demographics, culture, sport, and goth clubs (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] reddragdiva). Also I found a home for the most offensive flag ever.

Living on own is good but odd. Have pretty much totally unpacked now. Building seems to be approaching full occupancy - I can hear people above me and on Monday when I got back was following the chap opposite me into the building, and was followed by a woman who seemed to be going further down the corridor than me. But of course we have no idea who we all are. Maybe I should go knock on some doors and see if anyone needs sugar?

Hooray! I have a landline now. ADSL already ordered!

Apart from this, yes, my toilet is indeed flushing hot water. The builders are going to come and fix this.

cafe scientifique went a bit over my head really. oh well. after this, [livejournal.com profile] riak, [livejournal.com profile] lost_species, [livejournal.com profile] grim_tim and [livejournal.com profile] drjane came round to admire my blinds. they are cream and i indeed took photos of them (and of the flat with all the furniture in) but don't have a USB cable with me.

they do not keep the light out sufficiently, so will have to beg to be allowed to install curtains in the bedroom as well. with the blinds closed, there is still enough light in the room to read by! i did manage to sleep there overnight, but brokenly, waking up at 2am and then 5am and never really getting back to sleep again.

My flat apparently now has nice cream blinds. Shall update this entry with photos later.

hurrah! i shall have blinds tomorrow! meaning no more taxis back from town ever again! yay!

I've found out why they have sealed off the Rutland Street/Halford Street/Queen Street junction!

Halford Street pedestrian improvement scheme

It's not clear what it means by "public space". They are using a different pattern for the proposed pedestrianised bit of Halford Street between Charles Street and Yeoman Street, so maybe it won't be pedestrianised? But it's a bit hard to see how you can have a crossroads be a public space. Additionally, the line of the indicated space seems to indicate traffic would have to turn round.

I want a rug with the Mandelbrot Set on it. Any idea where I could get one from? Google tells me nothing.

[livejournal.com profile] lilgreendave and [livejournal.com profile] uv_pink_fluff visited me this evening, bearing a tiny delicate gargoyley thing to guard the flat, and that i must now name. :)

still no blinds! possibly monday or tuesday now. in meantime i have taped curtains to the windows, which let me sleep there after intelekt.

my flat is band D. £104/month!

provisional, of course. i don't owe them actual money until they get a confirmed valuation.

i think there urgently needs to be a general revaluation. my flat (built in 2005) is being taxed based on the estimated resale value that it would have had in 1991, had it existed. but of course in 1991 there were hardly any city centre flats, meaning it's really just a case of whimsy.

The blinds people are coming round this evening to measure up. Hurrah!

update: they did. yay!

still no blinds. grr. went into letting agency yesterday and asked them if there was any news - they said they would try to sort out things and phone back that day.

no phone call. so went in this lunchtime. this was a bit better, they phoned someone in my presence (and didn't get anywhere). bloody useless, them and me both. there seems to be some problem in that the landlord is hard to get hold of, or wanted to arrange for the
blinds to be done independently of the letting agency. well, i told them if it took much longer i would want to put curtains up. need more anger.

cafe scientifique tonight. will be taking my copy of The Science of Discworld 2 along to get signed.

My flat is progressing nicely. Furniture has been assembled, and the big TV moved there, in my absence, by family. I now have a sideboard that nicely seperates the kitchen area from the living area and provides me lots more storage. Now have pigeonhole keys and the inventory of the flat to go through. My first two pieces of post are spam, including one that seems to have been hand-delivered.

<70s timewarp>
I just contacted the GPO and they claim the soonest they will be able to install a phone line is the 19th of September!!!

BT are really taking the piss here. Are there any other telcos that do similar last mile connections in Leicester? Not happy with NTL at my folks' place.

Ikea trip went very smoothly, brought back a couple of low shelving units and a small chest of drawers which we built, and the remaining stuff was delivered about 6pm. In the meantime [livejournal.com profile] maxiie, [livejournal.com profile] sparklejess and Erin (livejournal-less?) came to keep me company.

BT still haven't phoned me back so I will try to kick some telco ass tomorrow morning, and maybe go hassle letting agency some more. Met the person who is moving into room 216 briefly today, first living person i've seen in the corridors (although i'm pretty sure there is someone at the end of my corridor now).

Going to Reading tomorrow! Huzzah!

reasonably good relaxed day. Charli off the mud visited me at the flat and then we went off and met [livejournal.com profile] maxiie, and then a few of maxiie's friends, and then lost Charli and came back to the flat and drank vodka and coke and pineapple (does this cocktail have a name? we agreed it is quite lethal), and then my mother came round to help finish the bed, and then [livejournal.com profile] landvaettir and [livejournal.com profile] eldritchreality came round to pick up random crap they had left on saturday and then everyone went back home. my waste packaging has found a good home with maxiie who apparently needs it to make boxes with.

tomorrow there is to be another gathering at my flat around 3pm.

i now have a proper old-fashioned coatstand! i looked all over leicester for this, before finally finding it in Habitat. And then carried it all the way to my flat (in the rain). Apparently I can collect my mailbox key from letting agency tomorrow. I also now have a licence to be brainwashed recieve television broadcasts. so will be taking my telly to flat and getting a freeview box and a splitter and an extension cable. bloody knackered.

pub quiz tonight at the Marquis! If you know about sport or geography, please join our team. tomorrow should be a bit more of a quiet day, with Charli visiting the flat. Then Wednesday will be another Ikea trip, to buy shelves shelves shelves and possibly a sideboard.

Update at 7pm: Now have temporary television (until we can be bothered to move the big one) and a reasonably inexpensive freeview PVR. I can rewind live TV! Wardrobe now done (apart from the handles), and good progress on bed.
